Identification of migratory birds course



Tarifa Spain is mainly known for its perfect conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

But we must not forget that Tarifa also is the place where millions of birds pass by when they go in autumn to the south to escape the cold weather in northern Europe and when they come back in spring.

 

The area of ​​the Strait of Gibraltar serves as the stage for one of the most important annual rafts of birds in Europe, in which several hundred thousand raptors and white storks are involved, which are concentrated here to make the jump between continents , both during the prenuptial and postnuptial time. Among all the migratory birds that migrate through the Strait, there is a large flow of white and black storks, as well as about twenty species of raptors, including European honey bee, black kite, Egyptian vulture, European short-toed, booted eagle, Montagu's harrier and hawks. The proximity between both continents, separated by a sea corridor of barely 14 kilometers, and the variety of ecosystems, which allows the birds to feed and rest while they wait favorable winds to cross the Strait, turn this area into one of the great sanctuaries for migration.

One of the best scenes to see this group of birds.

It's also the perfect opportunity to get to know the beautiful nature in the surroundings of Tarifa Spain.

A country house with views towards the Straight of Gibraltar and Africa is the perfect home base, not only for the ornithologists among you.
